1. Visit a Beach Club

Playa del Carmen has some beautiful beaches, being right on the Caribbean Sea, so if you want to maximize your time, it may be worth investing an afternoon in a beach club like Lido Beach Club, Mamita’s Beach Club, or Kool Beach Club.

2. Visit a rooftop pool

Perhaps the pool is more your scene. Fortunately, Playa del Carmen has some of the most beautiful rooftop hotel pools in Mexico. You don’t have to be a guest to visit – you can buy a day pass. The pool day passes work similarly to the beach clubs in that they guarantee admission, a chair, and credit for food.

3. Visit Rio Secreto

Don a wetsuit and prepare yourself to be awed by one of the most impressive underground cave systems in the world. Step back thousands of years as you weave in and out of stalactites and stalagmites, swim through crystal-clear freshwater pools, and discover the entrance to the underworld.

4. Take a cooking class

Eating Mexican food while on vacation in Mexico is one thing, but cooking it yourself can elevate the experience and appreciation to a whole new level. Cuisine across Mexico is so diverse, and Playa del Carmen has some of the most unique styles in the country. It’s worth it to spend the afternoon learning the centuries-old, passed-down cooking secrets in this part of Mexico.

5. Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum

While her famous Casa Azul museum is in Mexico City, Playa del Carmen opened a museum devoted to her just a few years ago. Though Frida Kahlo is an integral part of Mexican history, the downtown museum is a 21st-century experience. The interactive, digital journey recreates significant events in the artist’s life, which helped shape the heartbreaking paintings she created.

1 Zitla

If you’re looking to get off the tourist trail a bit and try a more local spot, then Zitla is an excellent choice. It’s enjoyable to come here for dinner on the weekend, as they usually have live music. Plus, it’s just a nice place to hang out, with some incredible murals on the wall and even a swing.

2 La Perla Pixan

This is one of the most incredible Playa del Carmen restaurants. It’s just off 5th Avenue but feels worlds apart from some of the kitschy places you’ll find there. It’s not only a restaurant but also a mezcal store if you want to take home some of Mexico’s famous liquor.

3 Zensi

Seeing as how this is Playa del Carmen, I had to include at least one restaurant that’s actually on the beach. My personal favorite goes to Zenzi, especially for dinner, as they have some pretty awesome live music every night of the week. There are two different bands each night, one at 5 pm and the next at 9 pm.

4 Porfirio’s

The people have spoken, and they have chosen Porfirio’s to top the list of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen. It’s more than just a restaurant, actually — it’s a complete gastronomic experience! People rave about their service, drinks, atmosphere, music, and of course, the food.

5 Cerveceria Chapultepec

When you’re just looking for a drink and some simple bar food, this popular chain is the place to go. Most items on the menu are only 21 pesos (about $1.25), so you can have a few drinks and snacks here without burning a hole in your wallet.

1 Rosewood Mayakoba

Rosewood Mayakoba is a gorgeous, peaceful retreat within the resort community of Playa Del Carmen, set on a mile-long stretch of beach. Though it features an extensive children’s program, the resort primarily attracts couples with its serene atmosphere, upscale restaurants, and spa. The 128 suites feature attractive contemporary decor — picture clean lines, white walls, and rich woods — as well as high-tech amenities and private outdoor plunge pools.

2 Hotel Esencia

The former estate of an Italian duchess, the ultra-luxurious Esencia oozes Mediterranean elegance and style. With just 29 rooms spread over 50 acres, the property feels intimate and exclusive and shows a thorough attention to detail in everything from the services to the decor. Upscale, contemporary rooms are housed in two-story buildings set amid lush tropical grounds and feature lots of high-end amenities, including pre-loaded iPods, Molton Brown toiletries, and in some, even private plunge pools. The gorgeous spa, excellent restaurant, and relaxing pools with ocean views are highlights.

3 The Grand Velas 

The Grand Velas — set on over 80 acres of mangroves that meet a postcard-perfect beach of white sand and turquoise waters– is one of Riviera Maya’s most sophisticated properties. It features 491 top-notch suites spread out in three different buildings (two family-friendly, one adults-only), all with their stunning pool complexes, gyms, and restaurants. The property is so huge guests will need to take a three-minute shuttle ride from the farthest building to the beach, but the hotel’s spotless service, outstanding food, a luxurious spa, and beautiful amenities make it an excellent pick for discerning (and well-heeled) travelers.

4 Banyan Tree Mayakoba

As one might expect from the ultra-luxurious Banyan Tree brand, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba is one of Playa del Carmen’s most sought-after resorts. All of the 164 villas feature sleek Asian-inspired decor and Mexican textiles — as well as walk-in showers, plunge pools, walled-in grass lawns, patios with hammocks, outdoor bathtubs, and fully stocked bars. The grounds,white-sand beach, and lagoon-like pool blend seamlessly with the surrounding nature. Considering the high-end spa, a plethora of outdoor activities — such as golf, snorkeling, and eco-tours — and the fantastic dining, it’s tough to find anything wrong with this property.

5 Hilton Playa Del Carmen

This adults-only, luxury, all-inclusive property with 507 rooms appeals to both 20- and 30-something couples. A particular draw of this resort is its proximity to the nightlife of downtown Playa del Carmen, especially bustling 5th Avenue, with the party-oriented will appreciate. But the gorgeous stretch of beach and the sophisticated rooms with two-person jetted tubs means romantic-minded couples will be pleased here as well. The range of features is, unsurprisingly, extensive, including seven restaurants and seven bars, an Olympic-sized pool, a wedding center, a spa, and daily entertainment.
