Isla Mujeres Wedding Photography by Gavin Higgins.
Tell the story of your Isla Mujeres wedding day with stunning images that you will be proud to display in your home, to show to your friends, and to be treasured by your family for generations to come.
Based in Tulum, Mexico, we also cover the entire Riviera Maya (Cancun, Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres) and locations around Mexico and abroad when required as destination wedding photographers.
We love capturing the moments between the moments on your wedding day. The cheeky smile, the unhinged belly-laugh, the tear rolling down a cheek. We want to capture the real raw emotions of your special day and present them in a way that enables you to relive those moments over and over again.
When we pose couples, we try to make your portraits look natural and candid. We want you to forget the camera is there and just enjoy the moment and let your love shine through authentically.
We want you to be relaxed and comfortable with us, and we take care to build your confidence and gently guide you where necessary.
No two weddings are alike, and we work hard to make sure we treat your wedding with the utmost attention and respect.
Please connect with us, and let’s discuss your unique wedding and how best we can tell your story.
Isla Mujeres is a gorgeous tiny island just off the coast of Cancun, Mexico. It is a vibrant and energetic island rich in culture and with a warm, welcoming vibe. Isla Mujeres sports all the modern amenities you could want while still retaining that magical small island charm. Isla Mujeres has all of the beauty of the beaches of Cancun but is far more laid back, and weddings here tend to be more intimate. With beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, excellent food options, and a wealth of activities for everyone, Isla Mujeres should be high on your list of destination wedding location options! |
Visitors from abroad usually start with a flight into Cancun International airport, and from there, taxis are readily available. Isla Mujeres is conveniently located just 20 miutes from Puerto Juarez, Cancun by Ferry. Ferry’s leave every half-hour and cost around 300 Pesos. Once you arrive on the island, there are a wide variety of transport options available, from taxis and rental cars to scooters. The most popular mode of transport on the island is a rental golf cart and makes for great fun cruising around the island. |
Isla Mujeres has a tropical savannah climate and a pronounced dry season; however, temperatures are hot year-round, and there is minimal seasonal variation in temperature.
July to September is the “rainy season” in Isla Mujeres. However, there are few “rainy days” as the rain generally is heavy and short-lived before the sun returns. Nevertheless, there are exceptional bargains to be had in Isla Mujeres between July and September, so you can often get the best rates at this time of year.
Expect average daily temperatures of around 31°C, with overnight lows of 21°C. June and September see a fair amount of rain, although July and August are considerably drier.
October and November form Isla Mujeres’s autumn. This is a popular time to visit as the breezes take the edge off the heat, and the rain dies down too. Daily highs of 31°C and overnight lows of 18°C are highly do-able, and it’s often ideal weather for the beach and for exploring the local area.
Winter is Isla Mujeres’s high season. Between December and February, you can expect to see a lot of crowds, and you may have to book your hotel well in advance. Temperatures fall only slightly, to around 28°C in the daytime and 17°C overnight, and there is little rain. If you’re visiting Isla Mujeres in the winter, pack for a beach holiday, but be prepared to jostle for space on the beach.
Isla Mujeres’s brief spring period falls in March and April, and this is the driest part of the year, with scarce rain and intense sunshine. Daily highs of 31°C and overnight lows of 20°C are in tune with the rest of the year’s temperatures, but with little rain and few breezes, it can feel too hot to make the most of the area’s exceptional beauty and history.
Punta Sur is located on the southern tip of Isla Mujeres. Here you can visit the Pre-Colombian Mayan Ruins of Ixchel or admire the stunning rocky views. This is a gorgeous place to come and enjoy the scenery. |
A 10-minute walk from the Ferry Pier is the famous beach of Playa Norte or North Beach. This is the main beach on Isla Mujeres and has been named one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. The water here is calm and shallow, making it an excellent spot for families or for just a chilled-out day of floating around. |
3. MUSA (Underwater Museum of Art)
One of the most popular activities in Isla Mujeres is to visit MUSA, (Museo Subacuático de Arte). You can tour the underwater museum by glass-bottom boat and enjoy over 500 sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor. |
Located on Sac Bajo is La Tortuga Granja, the hatching ground for the sea turtles on Isla Mujeres. From May to September, these grand creatures lay their eggs in the soft sand, where volunteers gather the eggs and place them in pens to keep them safe from predators. You can witness the local children and tourists releasing the turtles into the ocean from August to October. As with the whale sharks, don’t touch the sea turtles. The entrance fee is $3.00 per person. |
A visit to Mercado Municipal in Centro is a must on your list of things to do in Isla Mujeres. Not only can you soak up the local atmosphere, but the authentic food is cheap and delicious. |
Another popular water activity in Isla Mujeres is to swim with Whale Sharks. Whale Sharks can reach 14 meters, and they are just gentle giants weighing in at around 15 tonnes. Official regulating bodies have put a cap on tours at about $125 per person. The tour includes swimming with the whale sharks, breakfast, lunch, soft drinks, snorkel equipment, and usually some time to snorkel the reefs. |
2. Explore the island by golf cart
To experience all the things to do in Isla Mujeres, we recommend that you rent a golf cart for the day. This is entirely normal and is a popular thing to do. |
If you’re looking to get some exercise during your trip, practicing yoga is one of the top things to do in Isla Mujeres. |
4. Go fishing
The turquoise blue waters of Isla Mujeres are perfect for deep-sea fishing, inshore fishing, and spearfishing. The best months for sailfish and marlin are from mid-December through to July. If you prefer tuna fishing, the best months are between April and August. |
A perfect way to end the day is to enjoy a cocktail or two while sailing at sunset around Isla Mujeres. |
More like a restaurant than a cantina, but Javi’s does have happy hour and live music. The menu consists of seafood, choice beef cuts, chicken, and various salad and veggie options. A house specialty is the fresh-caught parmesan-crusted fish fillet with tamarind sauce. Dine in the front room or sit back in the rear courtyard with a pleasant terrace. |
Overlooking the quieter north side of the restaurant strip, Lola does popular Mexican fusion with dishes like coconut shrimp, plus several vegans, gluten-free items, and the decided nonvegan, non-GF Latin Surf n’ Turf. In addition, it has swings at the bar (fun!) and a tasty cocktail menu. |
3 Olivia
This delightful Israeli-run restaurant makes everything from scratch, from Moroccan-style fish served on a bed of couscous to chicken shawarmas wrapped in freshly baked pita bread. Ask for a candlelit table out back in the garden, and save room for the house-made cherry ice cream. Usually closes September to mid-October. Reservations recommended. |
The ‘Little Hill’ serves good, cheap Mexican food in a small, colorful setting. Seafood and chicken dishes predominate. Try the fantastic bean and avocado soup or the ceviche (seafood marinated in lemon or lime juice, garlic, and seasonings). The walls are cutely painted, and outdoors there’s a bit of alfresco dining section with umbrellas. |
See the south side of town and drop by Mango Café for self-serve coffee and a hearty Caribbean-inspired breakfast. The hot items here are coconut French toast and eggs Benedict in a curry hollandaise sauce. It’s a short bike or cab ride away, about 3km south of the ferry terminal. Cash only. No pets. |
Luxurious, all-inclusive, family-friendly resort on a quiet beach. Zoëtry boasts two gorgeous pools, a vast saltwater Jacuzzi, and spacious, sea-facing suites with private whirlpools or direct pool access, the island’s best restaurant, and a soothing thalasso spa with free salt water-based therapy for all guests. Unique services and activities include sunset yacht cruises, cooking classes, ceramics painting, and wine tastings. Rates are always inclusive of round-trip yacht transfer from Cancun directly to their private pier. They are located in Sac Bajo, near Tortugranja and next to Dolphin Discovery (guests get free admission here). |
Romantic, adults-only resort specifically designed for couples on a long stretch of sandy beach with an exceptional spa, top-notch service, fantastic dining, and a swim-up bar in the pool. All suites come with double-sized whirlpool tubs and private balconies; services include couples’ massages, candlelit dinners on the beach, and in-room dining. In addition, their generous resort credits program can be used toward offsite excursions, like dolphin swims, scuba or snorkel tours of MUSA, or for entry to their water park at The Grand in Cancun. Round-trip yacht transfer to and from Cancun is included in all room rates. Located at the base of Sac Bajo, a five-minute walk to the turtle farm, a few local restaurants, and Hacienda Mundaca, the ruins of a retired pirate’s home. |
All-suite, family hotel with unique kids’ amenities, including a zipline, an infinity pool, and a pint-sized water park with another pool. The hotel’s quiet suites sit on a bit of hill overlooking the ocean, most with private balconies or patios, some with Jacuzzis, and all with daily breakfast included. The water park offers a two-tiered pool with a swim-up bar, slides that end in the ocean, a rock-climbing wall, and a private pier, plus kayaks, snorkel gear, and paddleboards. The hotel sits at the island’s south end, near other family attractions, including Garrafon Reef Park, the turtle farm and sanctuary at Tortugranja, and Dolphin Discovery. |
This stylish and cozy, adults-only boutique features a rooftop sun terrace with an infinity plunge pool, Bali beds, and stunning ocean views. Their four suites have bespoke, handmade décor, such as conch shell showerheads, salvaged wood doors, and artisanal textiles. The owners live on-site and take pride in offering impeccable hospitality and presentation. Complimentary bicycles and daily Italian breakfast round out the experience. Fresh, contemporary, and tranquil ambiance, fifteen minutes walking to downtown and Playa Norte. |
Upscale, family-friendly boutique hotel with an infinity pool and rooftop palapa for massage and yoga. This rustic-chic property overlooks a small, secluded beach accessible by a bit of pathway. Décor is all locally made Yucatan art inspired by Spanish and Italian design. All suites come with a private balcony, while the Family Suite adds a kitchenette and sofabed. This gorgeous spot is in the middle of Sac Bajo, near Tortugranja and Dolphin Discovery, but its lush grounds make it feel more remote than it is. |
Privilege Aluxes is a gorgeous resort big enough to accommodate all of your wedding guests while still maintaining that stress-free island vibe to make your celebration feel warm and welcoming. Whatever you are dreaming of to make your stay memorable, they can help bring to life. From excursions and activities to flowers and details. Let them cover your ‘To Do’s so you can focus on saying ‘I Do!’ |

There is no better place to start your lives together as husband and wife than in one of their 35 oceanfront luxury suites. Spend your time with friends and family getting rejuvenated with seaside yoga, the complimentary use of their yacht for activities, and indulging in gourmet meals. Then, watch the sunset over Cancun from the privacy of your beachfront terrace jacuzzi. |
Situated on the idyllic Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres’ north end, Na Balam Beach Resort boasts the best beach on the island. Soft ivory sand and half a mile of the shallow turquoise sea are perfect for sipping and sunning the days away. Every afternoon dozens of boats drop anchor off of Playa Norte to see and be seen. It is lively, and if you are traveling with a group who like to have fun, this is a fabulous location. |
4 Vista De La Cruz Caribbean Luxury Villa
On Isla Mujeres’ rustic south end, perched on the cliffs high above the warm turquoise sea, and offering spectacular panoramic views of the sun setting over Cancun, is the island’s most sophisticated luxury villa, Vista De La Cruz. This is a fabulous location if privacy is a top priority for your wedding. |
Capitan Dulche is an exclusive beach club with its own private white sand beach that’s perfect for your barefoot wedding. Not to worry if your RSVP list is a big one; this is an ideal prominent event location with ample outdoor space and beautifully manicured gardens for your guests to mix and mingle. Isla Mujeres Wedding photography is our passion, and we would love to discuss how we can capture your Isla Mujeres wedding day in a way that leaves you smiling for years to come.
Leave your contact information and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Great we’re halfway there! I’m so happy that you love my wedding images. The next steps are to choose or create a package that suits your budget and then to have a chat to see if we are a good fit for each other.
We have a variety of pre-built wedding photography packages that cover most wedding budgets and photography needs, but we don’t take a cookie-cutter approach to anything we do for our wedding clients, and so we are happy to discuss your specific wedding budget or set of photography needs and to formulate a custom wedding photography package for you if you desire.
Once you have chosen a pre-built wedding package or have a clear idea of your budget and needs, the next step is to connect. We will do a deep dive into the specifics of your wedding day and how we work, and what you can and shouldn’t expect from us as your wedding photographers. This usually takes around an hour and can be done in person, over the phone, or via a Zoom/Skye/Whatsapp video call.
If we are a good fit, we will send you a wedding booking proposal, and once accepted and the deposit is paid, your wedding will be booked!
We are available to photograph weddings seven days a week.
We go through your wedding timeline for the day in detail and formulate a wedding photography timeline well in advance of the day. So you will know where we are and what we are photographing the entire day. We are also skilled at thinking on the fly and dealing with wedding timeline conflicts on the day as smoothly as possible.
Wedding coverage usually ends at 10 pm.
If this is something you require, we can facilitate it, but generally, we work on location for wedding photography.
For weddings, it will usually be Gavin Higgins and a photography assistant. Some packages will include a second photographer to ensure more comprehensive coverage.
I would prefer that only the people being photographed be there for the photoshoot. I do understand, however, that there will be circumstances where others will need to be in attendance, and in these situations, I ask that they give us space and do not distract you or interfere with the shoot so that I can concentrate on getting you the best images possible. If someone is interfering with my ability to provide the required services, I reserve the right to ask them to leave.
The number of wedding images you can expect to receive will be stated in your chosen wedding package or your personalized quote.
For weddings, we generally suggest a minimum number of images as we don’t like maximums. We don’t want to withhold great memories because of a number. We will edit and provide ALL of the good ones.
It’s important to remember that the number of wedding images delivered can depend on various factors such as the number of wedding guests, the amount of time on location, receptiveness of wedding guests to being photographed, etc
As professional wedding photographers, every image that we deliver to our clients has been carefully selected and retouched to meet our standards of quality and style. Therefore, our RAW (or not enhanced) digital negatives are generally not available to clients. Of course, there can be exceptions to this when agreed to before the wedding and well documented in the contract. In those instances, the client has the option to purchase, for an additional fee, the exclusive copyright for our art.
Have a camera; will travel!

Yes! We know your wedding is unique, and we are happy to formulate a wedding package that perfectly fits your needs.

No. Video is a specialized area and you should consider contracting a professional in this area if it is important to you. I can refer you to a few if you wish.
There is a reason Tulum has become such a popular destination on the Yucatan Peninsula. It’s the coming together of the history of the nearby Mayan ruins, the energy and creativity of the town, and the stunning landscape of a town where the lush green jungle meets the azure Caribbean sea and powder-white beaches.
Tulum used to be a quiet beach town, but The pull of ancient Mayan energies added to the magic of the natural wonders and historic sites have been attracting spiritually centered tourism for decades. These Days, Tulum has become a thriving tourism hot spot featuring modern hotels and resorts and all the amenities you could need.
Tulum is located on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Tulum is around 45 minutes south of Playa del Carmen and 90 minutes south of Cancun by road.
Tulum is famous for turquoise Caribbean waters, white-sand beaches, and world-class snorkeling and diving. Not to mention the food and parties! Your wedding guests will also have a fantastic time because there is so much to explore and do.
Cancun is recognized worldwide for its spectacular white sand beaches and its fascinating sea in turquoise blue tones. With unique natural places, Mayan culture, water activities, and adventure. International Cuisine, spectacular golf courses, sophisticated spa facilities, exclusive shopping centers, typical handicraft markets, as well as shows, bars, and nightclubs that give fame to its incomparable nightlife.
Playa Del Carmen used to be a sleepy fishing village but is now a Riviera Maya destination in its own right. Its lively nightlife and boutiques complement local taquerias and chic luxury hotels—all a bit more authentically Mexican than Cancun, just up the coast. During the day, you can head to the beach or take the ferry to Cozumel, and at night, stroll La Quinta (the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare and center of its nightlife) for some people-watching and excellent margaritas. And that’s not all; fantastic diving and snorkeling are just offshore, while the ancient ruins of Coba tower over the inland jungles nearby.
Isla Mujeres is a beautiful, peaceful paradise island across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun, Mexico. Isla Mujeres is a more laid-back and tranquil location than Cancun, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do! You can fill your day with water sports, shopping, exploring, and making new friends in Isla Mujeres.
Known for stunning white sand beaches, calm, clear blue waters, and some of the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. Isla’s diversity, from fishermen, artists, musicians, divers, chefs & ex-pats, form a unique community. Combining the beauty of the Caribbean, the history of the Mayans, and the infectious charm of the local people, Isla Mujeres has become a haven for people from all corners of the globe.
The beautiful island of Cozumel is located just off the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula—directly across the sea from Playa Del Carmen & about 90 minutes from the Cancun airport.
Located on the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the 2nd largest coral reef in the world), Cozumel is in a perfect spot for crystal-clear Caribbean waters, white powder sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling.
The Riviera Maya will never cease to amaze you.
The Riviera Maya coastline along highway 307 between Cancun in the North and Tulum in the south. Popular locations along this route include Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum. Between the towns are many resorts, hotels, restaurants and a wide variety of tourist attractions.
With over 120 km of crystal-clear waters, its white-sand beaches, cenotes, ancient archaeological sites, natural parks and theme parks, magnificent hotels, and exquisite cuisine, the Riviera Maya is paradise on Earth!
From the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, countless coastal Mexican towns and cities are excellent all year round. Even in 2020, a year impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, over 23 Million tourists traveled to Mexico. The appeal is obvious—crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, many all-inclusive resorts, authentic margaritas, and delicious Mexican cuisine—and it extends beyond the average vacation. The country is also a delightfully tropical wedding destination.
A destination wedding in Mexico starts with determining where you want to spend your wedding day. Popular wedding location options include Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, and more, and where you’ll end up comes down to what you’re looking for.
Found yourself a picturesque corner of the globe to host your destination wedding? Then the next thing to tick off on your to-do list will be finding a fantastic destination wedding photographer to capture your wedding day. Of course, you will be pouring in a lot of time, effort, and money to turn your wedding into the perfect celebration, so it should be beautifully captured as well.
From the exotic landscapes of your venue to stunning bridal portraits to the tiny details, a fantastic destination wedding photographer can capture it all in marvelous photographs. You want to work with a destination wedding photographer who will deliver amazing photographs and a seamless experience.
